Frames

Please note that while photograph sizes are precise, finished frame sizes are approximate. Because frames are made by hand, the dimension of your finished personalized piece in its frame may vary slightly from the listed size.

If you have any questions about framing, please contact me directly, and I will be happy to give you more information!

Canvas Prints

Prints on canvas are offered through the website and directly from me. There are two main differences between what I sell at art shows (or by email order) and what you would get through a website order.

  1. Canvas prints ordered through the website are produced by a reputable lab, not by the photographer. What is offered when you order through the website are gallery wrapped prints, where the canvas is stretched around an internal frame and attached to the back. This is a nice presentation. However, out of necessity, some of the image gets wrapped around the frame. In many cases it will look perfectly okay. With other images, there are elements in the picture (the top of a tightly framed lighthouse, for example) that would look horrible if wrapped. When you order a canvas print directly from me, I wrap only a small part of the image, attach it to the side of the internal frame and use a floating frame around the edge. This personal attention to detail ensures that you are able to view the full image. This also tends to differentiate my work from that of others.

  2. Canvas prints ordered through the web are considerably more expensive. It is not because the folks who fulfill the web orders are trying to rip you off. My canvas prints are more affordable because I have the equipment to print my own images and can pass the substantial savings on to you. The down side is that you have to e-mail the order to me and it may take a little longer to get it to you, depending on my schedule. However, I check my e-mail every day and will respond to your request as soon as possible.

Canvas Prints Ordered Through Me

Canvas prints ordered through me personally are printed with an Epson Pro-Graphics printer using archival inks. The canvas is then spray coated with a clear water based varnish, which protects the image and increases the longevity of the print. Life expectancy is rated similar to the traditional photographic prints.

I currently use two framing presentations, a floating frame, and a shadow box presentation. In both cases the prints are stretched over and stapled to a white wood frame.

Floating Frame
For the largest pieces, a floating frame of about ¼ inch thick is attached to the sides to give the piece a finished look.

Shadow Box Frame
I also offer the option of a rustic oak frame in a shadow box presentation. These frames are handmade and finished in a blue stain, giving each frame a Cape Cod look.

Fine Craft

Many of my images are available as functional art objects. Images on tile and other hard surfaces are made by a process called dye sublimation. The images are printed on special papers with inks that, when heated to high temperature under pressure, pass directly from a solid state to a gas and then bond with the solid substrate. The result is a clear, sharp image with vivid colors on a rigid object. such as:

Limited Edition Prints

Limited Edition Prints can be purchased either via an email purchase, or from an art festival.

Limited Edition Prints are sets of photographs sold in batches... Etc etc etc.

From the click of the shutter though matting and framing, all prints are personally made by Larry. Printing is done with a state of the art, large format Epson printer using archival inks. Unless noted otherwise Epson Premium Lustre paper is used. The stunning prints, produced using this ink/paper combination, are rated by Wilhelm Imaging to last for over 60 years when displayed properly behind glass.

Prints are offered in several sizes up to 16 inches by 24 inches. Larger sizes can be obtained by special order. All images are made with cameras having a 2 x 3 aspect ratio so full frame prints are available in 8x12, 12x18, and 16x24 sizes. For other sizes slight cropping of the image is necessary to fit the format. Many images are shown with the cropping already done. If the image can be presented either full frame (ex 8x12) or cropped (ex. 8x10) only the full frame image is displayed.

Through the web site, images are sold either loose (print only) or double matted and mounted on archival foam board. Framed images are available at the art shows or by special arrangements.

Matted images are made using archival, acid free, mats. The outer mat is white to off white in color and the color of inner mat (reveal) is chosen to compliment the image. The choice of a frame is yours. Frames can be purchased very reasonably at stores such as Wall Mart or AC Moore or you can purchase a custom frame at a framing specialty shop.

Purchasing a loose print can be a very economical way to get a high quality piece of art. Another advantages is that mat selection can be done to your specific taste and décor. Inexpensive mats are available at the same type of outlets mentioned above or you can have the print mounted and framed at a specialty framing shop to produce a truly unique piece.

All prints, 8x10 and larger are sold in limited editions. Collectively, sizes 8x10 and 8x12 are limited to a total of 500 prints. The total of all prints in larger sizes is limited to an edition of 250. All are signed and numbered on the mat or on the actual print if sold loose.

All prints are guaranteed for one year. If you return it, for any reason within that time period, no question will be asked and your money will be refunded provided the print is returned in original condition.

About the Prints

I offer prints on several different kinds of media, including traditional photographic paper, canvas, and functional art on selected hard surfaces.

Traditional Photographic Prints
All my prints are produced on an Epson Pro Graphics printer using archival ink. Today’s highly sophisticated ink jet printers enable printing on more exotic media. They produce prints that come closer to reproducing the broad range of light and color, seen by the human eye, but not reproduced by film or silver halide based papers.

These traditional photographic prints are offered loose (only available from website), matted, matted and framed, or as stretched canvas with a thin floating frame around the image.
Matted & Framed
Mats are acid free and archival. Frames are made from poplar, walnut, or oak. I make each frame by hand, custom fit to each individual photograph. If you are interested in framed or matted artwork, please contact me directly via email to discuss options and pricing, or, if you're in the area, visit one of the local art festivals I will be attending this year.

Loose Prints
Loose prints (i.e. not mounted, matted, or framed) are not sold at the shows, but can be purchased from my web site. They are available from 4x6 to 24x36. These are processed by a highly reputable lab and sent directly to you.

Canvas Prints
Images printed on canvas have become a very popular addition to what is offered at the Art Shows. These are also printed with the Epson Pro-Graphics printer using archival inks. The canvas is then spray coated with a clear water based varnish, which protects the image and increases the longevity of the print. Life expectancy is rated similar to the traditional photographic prints.

I currently use two framing presentations. In both cases the prints are stretched over and stapled to a white wood frame. For the largest pieces, a floating frame of about ¼ inch thick is attached to the sides to give the piece a finished look. I also offer the option of a rustic oak frame in a shadow box presentation.

Canvas prints may be purchased from both website and through email or art show, however the technique and description listed above is available only directly through me. For more information about canvas prints, and some examples of the work that I offer, please visit the Canvas Prints page.

Images on Tile and Other Hard Surfaces
These are made by a process called dye sublimation. Images are printed on special papers with inks that, when heated to high temperature under pressure, pass directly from a solid state to a gas and then bond with the solid substrate. The result is a clear, sharp image with vivid colors on a rigid object. These products have been referred to as functional art objects, some example of which include:

- Tile murals
- Trivets with tile insert
- Coasters
- Keepsake Boxes with tiled top
- Candle holders
- Framed tiles
- Glass ornaments

In order to offer my customers the highest quality product at the most attractive price, these items must be purchased at the art shows or by contacting me directly.

About the Photographer

My interest in photography has evolved over a lifetime as a result of seemingly divergent interests—one creative and one technical.

The creative aspect grew out of a love for the outdoor life, which in my case was nurtured by my family and friends where I grew up in western Pennsylvania. From fishing trips with my grandfather to camping with the Boy Scout troop, an appreciation for the outdoors and the beauty of the landscape was ingrained into my personality. As time progressed, the interest in capturing on film what I saw in nature took root.

The technical side of the equation came later. Graduating from college with a couple of degrees in chemistry, I was fortunate to have a 30-plus year career in the chemical industry. One project for which I had responsibility was to evaluate a safer alternative to the developer commonly used to process film. Now, courtesy of my employer, I had a darkroom in my laboratory and an ability to make color enlargements from slide transparencies. From this point on, it is pretty fair to say creation of photographic images had become more than a hobby, perhaps an obsession. Book by book, magazine after magazine, workshop after workshop, has brought me to the point where I can offer critically acclaimed works of photographic art to customers at shows throughout New England.

Today digital capture has replaced film and the chemical darkroom. Highly sophisticated ink jet printers enable printing on more exotic media. They come closer to reproducing the broad range of light and color, seen by the human eye but not reproduced by film or silver halide based papers. However, as far as technology has brought us, it cannot replace vision. I still get enormous satisfaction in capturing a great image-- a picture that stirs a pleasant emotional response in my mind and, hopefully, in the eyes of others--a picture that can be hung on the wall and enjoyed for many, many years.

I hope you derive as much enjoyment from viewing the images as I have had in creating them!
